From the news that got to us this morning, we can conclude that poker is not always a fun and harmless game. In Taiwan a huge amount of playing cards was discovered with a very dangerous amount of ‘formaldehyde’ in the ink.

Wikipedia on Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, nose and throat. Headaches and skin irritations can appear. It’s even possible to develop asthma.

After investigation it appeared that the maximum legally allowed amount of 75 parts per million was exceeded because 612 parts per million formaldehyde was found in the card decks. Playing cards during the Chinese new year is an ancient tradition, so many card decks were sold the last few weeks. The Chinese Authorities commended the producers of the cards to call all the decks back. About 17% of the card decks on the Chinese market seems to be intoxicated. Maybe stick to the fireworks during Chinese new year?
