Dutch research: 'Risk of poker addiction is limited' | Online Poker Bonus

Poker News·

A Dutch institute which does research on addictions in all forms, has done research now on poker addiction. The findings were presented this week.

The results show that poker in theory has a lot of characteristics that could lead to addiction and sequentially can give big problems in the long run. The research however, shows that the risks for an addiction to poker are small.

The group of poker addicts is limited -especially if you look at the large number of people that play poker- and problems that arise are often in conjunction with other forms of gambling. The small problems with poker addiction that came out of the research are more often related to online poker than to offline poker. Possible reasons are the lack of social control online. There are no reasons to believe that the addiction authorities in the Netherlands cannot handle the small group of poker addicts that do exist.

The research did say on the other hand, that poker addiction is seen more frequently. This is no surprise as the popularity of poker has risen enormously over the last years.

The institute that did the research came to its findings by using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. They interviewed key figures in the poker world and did a big survey under the Dutch population. You can find an abstract of the research in English here.
