888 Poker commercial banned from TV
The self-regulatory organization ASA banned a new 888 Poker commercial from British TV. The commercial was launched to promote 888 Webcam Poker and shows a guy playing webcam poker with others. Some of those ‘others’ are a group of three attractive females and one lady in bikini playing poker at the pool.
One viewer found the ad offensive and complained with the Advertising Standards Agency. In the viewers’ opinion ‘gambling was linked to sexual prowess when the player won a hand’. 888 responded that they wanted to bring across the social aspect of webcam poker. The relation between the players was purely platonic according to 888. The girl in bikini was meant to show that webcam poker is ‘fully interactive, instant and not affected by time-zones’.
The ASA ruled it is acceptable to use attractive people in commercials (oh yeah, really?), but the voice-over and the interaction between players implied a link between playing poker and ‘sexual bravery’, which is not in line with the ASA code of conduct.
